Why Handwashing Needs to be Step 1 for Every Activity—Always
Whether you’re cooking, eating or doing your makeup, make handwashing a priority

In a national survey conducted in May by Dial, the hand soap brand asked Canadians about their handwashing habits. Do you know what they discovered? A shocking 33 percent of respondents admitted to only washing their hands “sometimes” before eating a meal.
That’s a pretty surprising statistic, considering how strongly the Canadian government recommends handwashing to help stop the spread of COVID-19 (not to mention other illnesses like the common cold!).
October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, and Dial wants Canadians to make handwashing the official Step 1, no matter the daily activity they’re participating in — on Global Handwashing Day, and every day after.
Washing your hands before and after everyday activities using an antibacterial hand soap can help keep you safe as it kills harmful bacteria, so make sure to wash your hands before preparing food, snacking, putting in your contacts or even applying concealer.
If you have a jam-packed schedule and find it hard to remember to always wash your hands, use these tips to keep it top of mind.
1. Make handwashing Step 1—every time.
Get into the habit of soaping up your hands for at least 20 seconds before and after activities—especially if they involve touching food, your eyes or your face. Rather than preheating the oven or dabbing on makeup primer, always make handwashing Step 1.

2. Be thorough.
When you’re washing your hands, try turning off the tap for water conservation, and remember to wash the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails, too.
3. Sing a song.
To ensure you’re washing for the recommended amount of time, pick a song that lasts 20 to 30 seconds (or has a 20-second chorus!). Happy Birthday is a crowd favourite, but celebrities have also shared their go-to handwashing songs on social media.
4. Put it on a post-it.
Still having trouble always making handwashing a part of your daily routine? Tack a reminder to your bathroom mirror, refrigerator, recipe book or microwave door—wherever you’re most likely to see it.
5. Choose soap that looks, smells and feels good.
Washing your hands can be a pleasant sensory experience, especially when you choose an antibacterial hand wash with an invigorating scent like Power Berries, Fresh Pear or Spring Water—all found in the Dial Complete Antibacterial Foaming Hand Wash line. The new range also features a new Skin Smart formula with moisturizing ingredients and gentle cleansers—plus it’s free of parabens, phthalates and silicones.
