With the 2022 Olympic Games kicking off on February 4 in Beijing, Canada’s athletes are hard at work perfecting their skills and routines for the competition of a lifetime. And for ice-dancing duo Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier (a.k.a. 2021 ISU World Championships bronze medalists and 2022 Canadian national champions), community support plays a crucial role—whether it comes in the form of gifts and letters from fans or joyful cheering from the stands.

“We often say that it takes a village to raise an Olympian,” says Paul. “For us, that village includes the many people that have stood behind us and rooted for us for so many years.”

But this year, no international spectators will be allowed at the 2022 Olympic Games. And while the athletes have mentally prepared for this scenario and are comfortable practicing without an audience, they’ll miss the rush. “You can really feel the energy of the crowd in warm-up and I feed off that positive energy,” Piper says. “It’s truly a wonderful atmosphere to be part of with a full crowd.”

The fans¬—you!—are powerful. And even though you can’t be alongside your favourite athletes on their Olympic journey, you can still send them messages of love and support through #CheerWithCheerios.

How #CheerWithCheerios Works

More than 10 years ago, Cheerios started the Cheer Card program, which delivered over 100,000 physical Cheer Cards to athletes. This year, you can send real-time digital text and video messages straight to Team Canada athletes.

Here’s how:

  • Get your QR code from a Cheerios Cheer box.
  • Scan the code to share written and video cheers with your favourite competitors, learn more about General Mills’ 2022 Sponsored Athletes and unlock access to unique interactive games and trivia.
  • During The Games, the text and video cheers will appear in the Cheerios Cheer Booth in the Canadian Team’s Athlete Lounge at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Village. Athletes will be able to sit in the booth to hear and read your words of support, immersing themselves in your positive energy even though you’re thousands of kilometres away.

The Power of Cheer

Team Canada athletes are under immense pressure to perform, and you have the power to energize and uplift them so they can compete to the very best of their abilities. “It will be so nice to have this channel to interact with those who believe in us,” says Paul. Piper couldn’t agree more. “I don’t think spectators should underestimate the power and value of reaching out to us as athletes and performers,” she says. “Even the smallest message can go a long way!”
