5 Reasons to Visit the Niagara Region this Weekend

Looking for a weekend getaway that’s not too far from home? Here are 5 reasons why Niagara is the place to go.

1. It’s easier than ever to get to

Go Transit is now offering seasonal service (July 3-Sept. 7 and Oct. 9-12) to the Niagara region. You can take the Go Train from Union Station in downtown Toronto to Niagara Falls. (Summer service to Barrie is also offered. See the full schedule and offerings, here.)

Or, you can take the train to St. Catherine’s, followed by a Go Bus shuttle to picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake.

2. It has plenty of trails

Bring your bike! Go Transit’s Niagara trains have two special bike coaches (available Saturday, Sunday and holidays) where you can lock up your bike until you arrive at your destination. Bike the Niagara River Recreation Trail which runs approximately 58 kilometres along the Canadian side of the Niagara River.

3. It’s a foodie paradise

Niagara is often applauded for its wineries, but every great connoisseur knows that food pairings can make or break a wine. Companies like Niagara Culinary Tours and Taste the Town offer walking tours which pair culture and sightseeing with the very best food destinations. (From personal experience, you’ll want to pick up a few bottles of gourmet olive oil and balsamic vinegar at OLIV Tasting Room!)

4. It’s incredibly romantic

Niagara-on-the-Lake is often referred to as “Canada’s prettiest town” and it’s full of charming bed & breakfasts, as well as historic inns. Meanwhile, hotels in Niagara Falls offer romantic weekend packages, complete with a view of the Falls.

5. The wine!

No visit to the Niagara Region would be complete without stopping at at least one winery. Personal favourites include Peller Estates Winery and Konzelmann Estate Winery.
